Stay on Evictions extended to 23rd August

The Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick has announced a 2 month extension to the stay on evictions.  We have previously advised that since 23rd March, all new evictions were stayed until 23rd June. This meant that although new possession proceedings could be issued, they would automatically be stayed until 23rd June.

For all current proceedings issued prior to 23rd March, although possession orders could be made (however there have been no possession hearings since March), court bailiffs were not offering appointments until further notice.  This stay has now been extended to 23rd August.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has announced that they are working on new rules “to ensure vulnerable renters can be protected appropriately” when the stay of evictions is lifted.  It is unknown at this stage as to the content of these rules or whether the stay will be extended again.
