Our Women In Torbay & Totnes networking group was pleased to open up their doors to men for the first time in honour of International Men’s Day on Tuesday 19 November. The event took place at the Osborne Hotel where attendees enjoyed an evening of networking, drinks, and some entertaining fundraising in the form of pig racing.
Our networkers firstly listened to a genuinely inspiring talk by Tom Chapman, founder of the Lions Barbers Collective, a charity set up to tackle the issue of male suicide. Tom spoke movingly about his vision for a suicide-free world, and about the work that he and his network of barbers do to encourage men to talk about their mental health. As Tom explained, the barbershop is a safe, familiar place for men to talk and be listened to, and the charity is doing great work in both the UK and abroad by raising awareness of male suicide, training barbers in how to help clients who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts and working towards suicide prevention. Tom clearly made a profound impression on those attending and undoubtedly gained many new supporters for his cause.
After a break for drinks and networking there was the traditional WiTT raffle, with prizes generously donated by The Osborne and The Pebble Ridge Practice. Then finally, after weeks of intense training, the pigs were able to show off their speed and athleticism across four highly-contested races. Congratulations to everyone for their wins, and commiserations to all the losers.
All the proceeds from the raffle and the pig-races went to the Lions Barber Collective, and thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of all the gamblers we raised over £120.
Boyce Hatton would like to thank Tom Chapman, The Osborne and everyone who attended for making it such a worthwhile and fun evening. The men may have arrived looking a bit uncertain about what they were doing at a WiTT event, but hopefully they left having enjoyed an evening of networking with a difference.
The next WiTT event is the Christmas Party on 3rd December at the Royal Seven Stars Hotel. Sorry gentlemen, but it’s ladies only this time!
