Often, the most difficult questions arising from divorce and relationship breakdown relate to finance. It is important to appreciate that divorce only brings the marriage to an end often leaving financial claims relating to your home, savings, pension or business to be resolved.
The family team have significant experience of the options available to them. Gary Watson, the head of the Family Department, is well known and regarded for acting in high-value cases, where questions of valuation are particularly complicated because of the involvement of pensions, trusts or business assets.

I’m not married, do I need a solicitor?
It is sensible to take advice following a relationship breakdown. Even if you are not married there may be financial matters (for example the house that you live in or a business that you run) that need resolving and arrangements about the children to be agreed if possible.
Many people talk of “Common-law marriage” after living together for two years, but there is no such thing. We can advise you on the steps to take during a relationship in order to protect you both and also at the end of a relationship to consider whether you have any entitlement to each other’s property or to remain living there with young children.
If it is not possible to reach an agreement we can advise you on the possibility of making an application to the court.
